Summer Tips For HR Pros

It’s summer! That means people will be going on vacation in the next few months. While not everyone takes a vacation in the summer, many do. Summer can also mean many employees take long weekends or personal days.

How do you make sure work still gets done well and at an optimal pace? Plan proactively to fill the gaps and keep people from getting bored in the summer months. Don’t wait until work has piled up and teams are frantic. Here are some tips to keep your team busy and motivated this summer.

1) Check in with your Team

Summer is a great time to conduct mid-year assessments. Schedule one-on-one meetings to discuss how each employee is performing on the job and what their goals are. Make this session less formal than you would an annual review. Take advantage of the nice weather and chatting outside at a picnic table if possible. Keep it light and positive. Focus on what you value about them as an employee and what you can do to keep them on board.

2) Take Time for Training

If summer is a slow period, this may be the perfect opportunity to conduct the trainings you never have time for. What does your team need most? A refresher on productive work practices? Some safety training? If you have previously given your team just the basics on equipment or processes, take a deeper dive now when you have time. This time investment now will pay dividends when you get busy again.

3) Cross-train to Fill the Gaps

Pick up the slack created by summer vacationers by training your people on each other’s jobs. This allows them to step in as needed when someone is sick or absent. It also makes them a more valuable employee with these added skills and can keep them engaged in the workplace.

4) Try Some Team-Building Activities

Keep your people motivated with some friendly competition. Create contests that encourage top performance and feature summer themed prizes. Host a parking lot picnic where management does the grilling with activities like wiffleball. It’s the perfect time of year to get a little fresh air and build some comradery.
